❓ Are we quietly normalising a 50-hour teaching week in England? 📖 Read more: https://www.teachertoolkit.co.uk/?s=W... In this video, I summarise the Department for Education Working Lives of Teachers and Leaders (Wave 3) survey - updated February 2026 - and what it reveals about workload, wellbeing, behaviour, pay, and retention in English state schools. All the DfE workload research: https://www.gov.uk/government/collect... Working Lives of Teachers and Leaders, reports: https://www.gov.uk/government/publica... 📊 WHAT DOES THE WORKLOAD RESEARCH SUGGEST? 1. This is a large national snapshot (10,020 teachers and leaders, plus leavers). 2. Average weekly hours remain high: teachers report ~48 hours (full-time ~51), leaders ~56–57. 3. Only 22% agree workload is acceptable, and behaviour follow-up is rising as a time drain (60% say “too much”). 🗓️ WHAT SHOULD TEACHERS START DOING NEXT MONDAY MORNING? 1. Track one week of time-wasters (emails, admin, behaviour follow-up) and quantify it 2. Replace “do more” with “do less”: agree one minimum-effective routine in your department 3. Use behaviour systems that reduce rework (templates, shared language, fewer hand-offs). 🎯 WHAT SHOULD SCHOOL LEADERS NOW CONSIDER? 1. Shift from workload management to workload removal (stop duplicative data and admin loops) 2. Treat behaviour follow-up as workload: simplify processes and protect teacher time 3. Retention is the metric: around one-third are considering leaving within 12 months (not retirement). ⚠️ CAVEATS AND LIMITATIONS? This is survey data (self-reported hours and perceptions), not direct observation. It's useful for trends, not precision. I would advise people reading the full report to refrain from cherry-picking the “improvements." Consider the lived experiences of teachers: workload, stress, behaviour, and trust still shape retention decisions. 🧠 Remember: evidence-informed ≠ guaranteed success. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:37 What the DfE workload survey is (Wave 3) 01:45 The influences on teachers returning to teaching 02:13 Views on returning to teaching 02:42 The support teachers receive 04:35 No. of hours during the working week 05:09 The real workload culprits (admin + behaviour follow-up) 07:06 The workload culprits for school leaders 08:51 Flexible working arrangements 09:47 Teacher/Leader views on pupil behaviour 11:25 Wellbeing and job satisfaction: what’s changed? 12:20 The data on teacher stress and mental health 🔗 KEY LINKS: 📥 Download resources: https://www.teachertoolkit.co.uk/reso... 📬 Newsletter sign-up: https://www.teachertoolkit.co.uk/news... 🎓 Teacher CPD & training: https://www.teachertoolkit.co.uk/trai... 📚 Books by Ross Morrison McGill: https://www.teachertoolkit.co.uk/books/ #teacherworkload #schoolleadership #education #behaviour #teachertoolkit #rossmcgill #teaching #wellbeing #flexibleworking #teacherrecruitment #mentalhealth #teacherwellbeing #dfe
