Balıkesir is a province of Turkey and the seventeenth most populous city. The province, which is located in the Southern Marmara Section of the Marmara Region and some of its lands are in the Aegean Region, has coasts to both the Marmara and Aegean Seas. In Turkey, there are only 6 provinces that are adjacent to two seas. The province is located in Northwest Anatolia. There are Bursa and Kütahya provinces in the east, Manisa and İzmir provinces in the south and Çanakkale province in the west. It is neighbor to the Greek island of Lesbos from the Ayvalık district. According to 2019 data, its population is 1,228,620. The surface area of the province is 14.583 m². There are 82 people per km² in the province. The district with the highest density is Karesi with 254 people. The altitude of the province from the sea is 145 meters. According to TUIK data in 2016, there are 20 districts and municipalities, and a total of 1129 neighborhoods in these municipalities. Balıkesir region, which is generally known as Misya and Karesi in history, remained under Roman, Byzantine, Anatolian Seljuk, Karesi Principality and Ottoman rule over time. Its main source of livelihood is agriculture and animal husbandry, and it is famous for its agricultural products such as okra, cowpea, melon, olives, olive oil, head cheese, and also for its coastal towns, which are more prominent in domestic tourism. Yagcibedir carpet, cologne, cream, currant, quince toast, Susurluk buttermilk, fringed ravioli and höşmerimi are other well-known local products. The 9th Main Jet Base Command, which is the first jet base of the Turkish Armed Forces Air Force Command, and the 6th Main Jet Base Command are located in Balıkesir.
