The Huntingtons’ Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens is one of the great public gardens in America. A National Historic Landmark, Brookgreen is a cultural institution unlike any other, blending art, nature, and history. Founded in 1931 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington as America’s first public sculpture garden, Brookgreen is now home to the nation’s largest and finest collection of American figurative sculpture. The Huntingtons purchased the 9,000 acres that were the site of four former rice plantations, as a secluded retreat in a warmer climate for Anna to regain her health following a tuberculosis diagnosis. They soon fell in love with the Lowcountry landscape and began collecting and commissioning sculpture to display to the public as “… a quiet joining of hands between science and art.” Throughout their lifetimes, the Huntingtons protected Brookgreen’s 9,000 acres of pristine coastline as a wildlife sanctuary, and developed the Gardens designed by Anna Huntington, employing local labor, improving community housing, building schools and churches, and providing healthcare at an on-site clinic. Now approaching its 90th anniversary, the legacy of the Huntingtons continues with artwork by more than 450 sculptors on display, and as a center for conservation and education featuring sculpture workshops, programs about Gullah Geechee culture and Lowcountry history, an accredited native animal zoo, and nationally recognized botanical garden.
