The Michael V. Hayden Center for Intelligence, Policy, and International Security hosted in person in Arlington, VA, or via livestream on March 11th at 7 pm ET, a timely and thought-provoking conversation with internationally recognized expert on intelligence, Dr. Mark Lowenthal. Dr. Lowenthal discusses his important new book, "Vigilance Is Not Enough: A History of United States Intelligence," a sweeping and authoritative examination of how the U.S. intelligence enterprise evolved into the world's most powerful. Drawing on decades of scholarship and senior government service, he explores not only the history of American intelligence, but also the pressing challenges it faces today — including the balance among security, secrecy, and civil liberties, the transformative impact of technology, and the difficult choices confronting intelligence leaders in a democracy. The conversation is moderated by Dr. David Priess, Hayden Center Senior Fellow, and includes time for audience questions. Dr. Lowenthal is the author of ten books, including the seminal Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy (now in its 10th edition), widely used in intelligence studies programs across the United States and around the world. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has served in senior leadership roles within the U.S. Intelligence Community and in Congress. He also established the National Intelligence Priorities Framework, still used by presidential administrations to guide intelligence collection, analysis, and dissemination. We hope you enjoy this important discussion on the past, present, and future of U.S. intelligence. The Hayden Center is located at George Mason University's Schar School of Policy and Government in Arlington, VA.
