This video discusses Euripides' play Hippolytus, which I argue is one of the great examples of the "hubris is punished" model of Greek tragedy. In the larger scale, Hippolytus' hubris is punished because he refuses to acknowledge Aphrodite's power or authority, so she causes his stepmother Phaedra to fall in love with him--which precipitates a series of events sending her to suicide and having her leave a note blaming Hippolytus for raping her. This note leads to the smaller scale act of hubris, when Theseus curses his son and prays that Poseidon will destroy the boy. *If you’d like to reference this information or would like to ask me a direct questions for an assignment you are working on, that’s awesome and I am glad to help.
