High-Viz Motorcycle Gear, Real or Hype?

It is commonly quoted that wearing that wearing high-viz motorcycle gear can reduce your chance of crash by 37%, however the details of the source study are almost never looked at. It turns out that there was not enough of a sample size to make a determination about yellow or orange (typical high-viz colors) helmets and jacket and pant color was found to make no difference to motorcycle visibility. So how can this study make the statement that fluorescent or reflective clothing can reduce your risk of crash, when they did not have a big enough sample of high-viz clothing? I cannot answer that question. In looking at other studies involving bicyclists, it was found that the use of high-viz clothing made no difference in the number of accidents or near misses. You may be seen better, but it does not make driver's more responsible around you. It does seem worthwhile to do the following: 1. Use a white or bright colored helmet to maximize visibility. 2. Use daytime running lights to maximize visibility. 3. Don't thing that high-viz is a panacea. Bad drivers will not care what you are wearing.
