Today on the farm we tackle some important greenhouse tasks — filling Dutch Bato buckets with perlite and stocking the storage room with a full season’s worth of fertilizer — before welcoming a very special guest. A 100-acre Louisiana produce farmer came to visit our farm. Scott Ryan of Ryan Farms Produce grows over 100 acres of fruits and vegetables in Louisiana, including 30 acres of watermelons, purple hull peas, sweet potatoes, okra, tomatoes, 425 peach trees and much more. His diversified produce operation is split between 50% direct retail at the farm and 50% wholesale — and buyers come to him. In this interview, we discuss: • How he got started farming • What it takes to manage 100 acres of produce • The crops he focuses on in Louisiana • Weed, insect, and disease pressure in the South • Selling directly from the farm • The realities of farming in Louisiana • Using the H-2A temporary agriculture worker program We also include extensive B-roll footage from his farm, including harvesting and drone shots, to give you a closer look at large-scale fruit and vegetable production in the southern United States. If you're interested in vegetable farming, fruit production, watermelon farming, peach orchards, sweet potatoes, okra, and diversified produce operations, this episode gives a look at how farming in Louisiana compares to what we do here in Ohio.
