Every man on every ship understood what waited out there. The Mid-Atlantic Gap was hundreds of miles of open ocean stretched between Newfoundland and the British Isles, far beyond the reach of any patrol aircraft. They were on their own but knew with dread that they were not alone. Sure enough, the night of September 10 exploded into chaos. Water geysered skyward as torpedoes found their marks. Ships filled to the brim with supplies vanished beneath towering plumes of water. Emergency sirens wailed across the convoy as flames leaped from vessel to vessel. Desperate gunners aboard the escorts swung their 20-millimeter turrets wildly, firing illumination rounds that briefly lit the churning sea, revealing only glimpses of German U-boats before they disappeared again into the darkness. The crews called it "The Pit." Commanders called it a problem with no solution. It was the most dangerous place in the world.
