Discover the fascinating engineering behind the famous plugholes at Ladybower Reservoir in the heart of the Peak District. Also known as bellmouth or “morning glory” spillways, these huge circular drains control the water level of the reservoir by allowing excess water to flow through massive vertical shafts and tunnels before being released into the River Derwent below the dam. Each plughole is around 24 metres (78 ft) wide with a drop of around 20 metres, making them both an engineering marvel and a spectacular sight when they overflow.
