I promise that more useful and interesting videos than this are coming up. Hey, at least this one's in high definition! When I talked about the OptiPlex 760 computers that I had picked up, I mentioned an option in the BIOS setup utility that would command the front panel/CPU fan to full speed instead of allowing it to run slowly unless and until the CPU heated up enough to need more cooling. This is the result of running the CPU utilization up to 100% and holding it there for a while. These big (by computer cooling standards) fans are absolutely wicked. This isn't even their top speed. The fan in this video is in a Dell Dimension E521 mini tower computer. This computer recently received a CPU upgrade to an Athlon 64 X2 "Brisbane" 6000+ CPU. Many people report that upgrading the CPU to that level on a Dimension C/E521 is hit or miss. If you're feeling adventurous, the CPU I used is an ADV6000IAA5D0 model and the motherboard is a Dell 0CT103 running BIOS 1.1.11. As always, the management disclaims all responsibility--if you try this and blow something up, that isn't my problem and you are now the proud owner of multiple pieces instead of one! There are reports that Athlon 64 Brisbane CPUs just aren't supported by the C/E521. I've got to disagree, as both of the ones I have shipped from the factory with 3600+ Brisbane CPUs. Although, given that the last BIOS for this machine is from 2007 and the CPU I used is from 2009 or so, I'm impressed that it works. It's been completely stable over about three or four days now. The only obvious issue is that of thermal management. Even at 100% utilization, the CPU doesn't get anywhere near hot enough that the fan should need to run at nearly full throttle. Was this a worthwhile upgrade? Absolutely. It's no problem for this computer to play 1080i AVCHD video using software deinterlacing without stuttering or hiccups, even with the onboard GeForce 6150 video. (My 2009 era Core 2 Duo/nVidia 9400GM Macbook can't quite manage all that!) I posted this video with an ulterior motive in mind. Here's what I'm really after. I want any sort of technical information concerning the SMSC SCH5504-NS and SCH5514-NS LPCIO chips used on various Dell Dimension and OptiPlex motherboards. I know from having asked Standard Microsystems that these parts are of a custom nature and that information on them is "restricted". No one that I've been able to reach at Dell has had any idea what I'm talking about, much less how to go about getting such information. So, if you're in a position to get the information I seek without putting your job in any danger, talk to me. Someone's got to have the goods on these ICs. Searching the web has not been productive. I was surprised by how clearly the operating noises made by the hard drive can be heard. Anyone want to guess at the drive maker?
