#renovationhouse #architecture #homedesign Inside a Magically Restored Home | Casa Pakaal by Mexican studio Workshop Arquitectos Located in one of Merida, Mexico’s most important streets is Casa Pakaal, a historic house renovated by Mexican studio Workshop Arquitectos. No strangers to restoring traditional architecture in the area, the studio focused on converting the original bones of the house while strengthening them with new materials and construction systems. From the street, its boxy exterior seamlessly blends with the urban fabric, but stepping through the main threshold reveals an architectural gem. Several courtyards dot the property to engage the family members with the landscape. Large tempered glass doors are anchored to the original wooden door frames, drawing in sunlight and views of the plants and the hundred-year-old Ramón trees. Under its new roof and fortified masonry walls, the interiors incorporate a material palette in line with the local vernacular. Joining the old stone walls are colorful pasta tile flooring typical of the Yucatan region, generous glazing, and stone floors and walls. Inside, the spatial program is all about connecting to the outdoors. The master ensuite has glass façades that open directly to the swimming pool and a private garden. The customised kitchen and living area connect to the idyllic outdoor terrace, which is, without doubt, the heart of Casa Pakaal. A lovely area fitted with an outdoor kitchen, dining area, a deck over the chukum pool, and a wood-fire grill, it is the ideal place for entertaining. Through traditional and modern interventions, Workshop Arquitectos integrate the past with the present, emerging with a home that gracefully balances the natural and built environment.
