Join me for a walk to - and around - the African Renaissance Monument (Monument de la Renaissance Africaine) in Dakar, Senegal. This bronze structure is actually the largest statue in Africa and was officially unveiled to the public on the 4th of April (National Day in Senegal) in 2010, thus marking the 50th anniversary of the country's independence from its former colonial 'master', France. The controversial structure - the edifice was criticised by local imams for its immodest depiction of the bodily form - is reminiscent of Soviet modernism, which is perhaps not too overly surprising as it was built by Mansudae, a North Korean sculpting firm.
