Gallery 44 is an artist-run centre in downtown Toronto. Since its inception in 1979 by a group of photo-based artists whose initial drive was to share darkroom space, Gallery 44 has grown and evolved into a vibrant hub supporting the practices of hundreds of members. Offering darkrooms for analogue printing, digital photography equipment, printing, framing space and an education hub (complete with library of photo-centric instructionals and monographs). Beyond its production facilities, Gallery 44 hosts year-round programming of cutting-edge contemporary art centred around expanded ideas of photographic image making. As one of the last remaining publicly accessible photographic darkrooms in the country, the centre plays a critical role in keeping photographic knowledge, processes, and community alive and well in Toronto. Visiting Gallery 44 in the Winter of 2025 to tour Exiting the Castle, a solo exhibition by Hannah Doucet, Format sat down with Executive Director Alana Traficante to talk about the exhibition, as well as the vital role Gallery 44 plays in the art ecosystem of Canada.
