It is the leading cancer in Indian women and the second most common cancer in women worldwide. How can we prevent cervical cancer? A well-proven way to prevent cervical cancer is to have testing (screening) to find pre-cancers before they can turn into invasive cancer. Though there are several methods of prevention of cervical cancer, prevention by vaccination is emerging as the most effective option. Second option is the The Pap smear test and the human papilloma virus (HPV) test are used for this. Pap smear test is used to find cellular abnormalities in cervical tissue, aiding early diagnosis. The best way for women to protect themselves against cervical cancer is to have the HPV vaccine when aged 12–13 years, and then have regular Pap tests once they are 18, or 2 years after first sexual contact, whichever comes latest. The two HPV vaccines for cervical cancer currently available in India are bivalent (Cervarix) and quadrivalent (Gardasil). Only two doses of the vaccine administered at a 6 to 12 month interval are enough to protect girls under 15 years of age.
