The “Madonna and Child” is a small gem of art. The artist, Carlo Crivelli, is one of the most important Venetian painters of the 1400s, who moved from Padua to Dalmatia, to Zadar and then to the Marche Region, settling mainly in Ascoli Piceno. The work was found inside a cupboard in the sacristy of the Church of San Francesco ad alto in 1861. According to a typical setting of the artist, the Madonna is represented in half-length with Jesus in her lap, leaning against a stone parapet, on which the painter's signature can be clearly read. The illusion of a drape hanging from the frame isolates the two central figures, showing two pieces of perspective landscape on the sides. As you will notice, the painting is rich in meticulous details and imbued with a particular Marian and Christological symbolism. The Child is holding a goldfinch tied to a thread in his left hand, which wants to recall his passion. On the other hand, however, the kernel inside the open walnut is an allegory of the incarnation of Christ in Mary’s womb. The apples of the festoon allude to original sin; the cucumber is the symbol of the resurrection of Christ, recalling the biblical story of Jonah, who was trapped in the belly of a whale and who awakened after three days under a pergola of cucurbits. The open book on the parapet is the traditional accessory of Mary, Mater Sapientiae. The extreme elegance of the Virgin is enriched by the mantle painted with real gold leaves and decorated with pearls and rubies.
