HAPPY 420 DAY! Cannabis, also known as marijuana, has a long and complex history in America. The plant is believed to have been introduced to the United States in the early 17th century by European settlers who used it for medicinal and recreational purposes. During the 19th century, cannabis was widely used as a medicine and was even available over-the-counter in pharmacies. However, the turn of the 20th century saw a shift in public opinion towards the plant, as its association with Mexican immigrants and African Americans led to negative stereotypes and racist propaganda. In 1937, the Marihuana Tax Act was passed, effectively criminalizing cannabis at the federal level. This led to a decades-long “War on Drugs” that disproportionately targeted minority communities and led to the mass incarceration of non-violent drug offenders. In recent years, however, public opinion has shifted towards the legalization of cannabis. In 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana, and since then, over 30 states have followed suit. In 2012, Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize recreational marijuana, and now, over a dozen states have done the same. Today, cannabis remains a contentious issue in America, with debates about legalization and regulation ongoing at both the state and federal levels. #420DAY #420day2023 #historyofcannabisinamerica
