They can be 18 feet from claw to claw and weigh 42 pounds. If only they didn't live half a mile down.... They’re the largest crab in the world and, despite their intimidating appearance, are absolutely harmless. A few facts you may not know about them: • In case you ever need to tell them apart, female Japanese spider crab has much shorter chelipeds. • They live on animal carcasses and shellfish, making them an essential part of the marine ecosystem. • They can be found from 160-2000 feet, meaning you may get lucky enough to see one while SCUBA diving. • But only if you happen to be diving in Suruga Bay or the surroundings. • They live up to 100 years. We think. • You’d think they wouldn’t need this skill, but giant spider crabs use camouflage as well as their thick exoskeletons. And, of course, they’re delicious. Which may ultimately be the end of them.
