Naturally, I booked a same-day round trip to try both aircraft—outbound on the A330 and back on the A340. This report covers the first leg from Zürich to Palma on the A330. Interestingly, I booked the ticket from Basel SBB (ZDH) because it was cheaper and included a free train ticket to Zürich Airport. I even received a boarding pass for the train—something new for me! During the train ride, I checked my booking and was shocked to see that I had been upgraded to Business Class. As a passenger without status, this was completely unexpected. I assume Economy was overbooked and, as a solo traveler, I was selected for the upgrade. Initially assigned a middle seat, I quickly changed it to a window seat near the engine. After arriving at Zürich Airport, I headed straight to the lounge. Fast track security was quick, and the lounge felt more relaxed compared to my previous visit—no more strict COVID measures. The food selection was decent, but I only had a light breakfast before heading to gate B38. On the way, I spotted the A340 that would operate my return flight later that day. Boarding was done by groups, and as a Business passenger, I was among the first onboard. The aircraft featured SWISS’ rather outdated A330 cabin in a 1-2-1 / 1-2-2 configuration with relatively small IFE screens. My seat was 6A, a throne seat next to the left engine. Then came another surprise. A crew member approached me explaining a possible seat swap. Another aviation enthusiast had originally selected my seat, but during boarding the system reassigned him to 1A in First Class. He wasn’t happy, as the very front seat limited his engine view for filming. The crew asked if I’d like to swap with him. Of course, I said yes—this meant my very first First Class experience! Seat 1A in First felt incredibly spacious and private. Three windows, a much larger and more modern IFE screen, multiple storage compartments including a huge foldable tray table (large enough to dine face-to-face with someone, thanks to the ottoman seat with seatbelt), USB ports, power outlets, seat controls and a mirror. Next to the seat are a lamp and even a small privacy door. The bed mode was impressively large. My seat had a minor issue—it could recline when it normally shouldn’t—but nothing major. Notably, there were no personal air vents, and the center seats lacked overhead bins, giving the cabin a very open feel. After takeoff, a cold meal was served: ham with salad, warm bread, and a pistachio dessert. I paired it with a Coca-Cola. Before landing, the crew offered another drink round—I chose water—and, of course, I received the iconic SWISS chocolate. The lavatory was standard. Wi-Fi was installed but unfortunately not working on this flight. Overall, it was a very enjoyable short flight with SWISS. The unexpected upgrade to Business—and then to First—made the experience truly memorable. The First Class hard product was significantly better than Business on the A330, and the crew were exceptionally friendly—among the best I’ve had with SWISS. The only slight disappointment was the cold meal, as some competitors like Iberia offer hot dishes on similar routes. I would definitely fly SWISS again, especially to try their new “SWISS Senses” cabin (which I’ve since experienced). However, I’d probably avoid the A330 on long haul flight in Business/Economy due to its outdated cabin—unless First Class is involved again! © Aviation LF 2026 You can share this video.
