Weather Station Kurt — designated WFL-26 — was built by Siemens & Halske for the German Meteorological Service and deployed by the Kriegsmarine as part of a desperate effort to salvage Germany's collapsing North Atlantic weather intelligence network. The Battle of the Atlantic depended on accurate forecasting. By 1943, Allied operations had dismantled Germany's manned weather ships, pressured its Arctic outposts, and intercepted its reconnaissance aircraft. The automated station program was a contingency — and WFL-26, installed on a frozen Labrador beach by Kapitänleutnant Peter Schrewe's crew, was its most audacious deployment. It sat undiscovered for 38 years until a retired Siemens engineer named Franz Selinger found it — not in a military archive, but in a corporate filing cabinet in Munich. Heroes of the Front investigates the military conflicts and classified stories that mainstream history overlooks. New investigations posted weekly. This investigation examines the role of the Reichswetterdienst in sustaining U-boat wolfpack operations, the limitations of Allied High-Frequency Direction Finding (HF/DF) coverage in high-latitude regions, and the fate of U-537 — later reassigned to the Monsun Gruppe and lost with all hands in the Java Sea after an engagement with USS Flounder (SS-251). The station is now displayed at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. #BattleOfTheAtlantic #WorldWarII #CanadianWarMuseum 0:00 — The Object in the Glass Case 1:15 — The Weather War: Battle of the Atlantic 4:00 — U-537's Crossing to Martin Bay 6:30 — The Four Silences Begin 6:45 — Silence One: The HF/DF Blind Spot 8:00 — Silence Two: The Reichswetterdienst Archives 9:15 — Silence Three: The Geography of Irrelevance 12:00 — Silence Four: Franz Selinger and the Filing Cabinet 15:30 — The Crew of U-537 17:00 — The Question the Museum Can't Answer ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video is a documentary exploring historical archives, unclassified military reports, and unproven historical theories.
