26 Die in FR Tower Fire at Banani

26 persons have been confirmed dead in the fire at a high-rise in Dhaka’s Banani. An on-duty doctor of Kurmitola General Hospital told The Daily Star that the unidentified dead body has been kept there. Several others injured were also hospitalised there. Gulshan zone police’s Assistant Commissioner Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star he heard about two deaths, but was yet to ascertain the information when last reported. Meanwhile, at Banani, firefighters had begun rescuing those trapped inside the 19-storied FR Tower, on Banani Road 17, amid a crisis of water to douse the blaze. Helicopters were spraying water on the building as firefighters were bringing people out the window panes in groups, using ladders, our correspondent reports from the spot. When the fire sparked around 1:00am, at least six people were seen falling off while trying to escape the blaze. Many others were trying to climb down on the ledges. Nineteen firefighting units were dispatched to the scene, a duty official at Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters told The Daily Star around 2:15pm. They were seen crying in despair and gathering in groups as they could not reach the phones of their family members. One such aggrieved mother told The Daily Star that her daughter Aparajita Barua works in an office on the 12th floor of the building. “During our last contact, she told us there were huge fumes in the building and that she was finding it difficult to breathe.
