Canada reported its first case of AIDS in March 1982. At that time, the average life expectancy for a person living with AIDS – the final stage of HIV infection – was one to three years. The introduction of antiretroviral therapy in 1996 changed the course of history. AIDS-related deaths sharply declined, and people living with HIV could live long, healthy, active lives. Because of these medical advancements, half of all Canadians living with HIV are now over the age of 50. Still Here is a snapshot of the lives of Juno Award-winning singer Billy Newton-Davis (39 years living with HIV), advocate Trevor Stratton (35 years living with HIV), and drag performer Jade Elektra (35 years living with HIV) as they navigate the golden years once thought an impossible achievement for people living with HIV. Defying the odds of the virus that has claimed the lives of over 44.1 million people globally since the early 80’s, Jade, Trevor and Billy are not only aging with HIV – but they’re aging well, and on their own terms. A CANFAR film, with funding from MERCK.
