On May 14, 2002, El-P released Fantastic Damage, his first album as a solo artist. Before Fantastic Damage, El-P was a member of the New York underground rap group, Company Flow with fellow MCs Big Juss and Mr. Lens. After dropping the Funcrusher EP in 1996, the group signed to Rawkus Records and released Funcrusher Plus the following year. Funcrusher Plus was praised by fans and critics for its dense lyrics and wordplay and dusty, future hell-scape sound, and its considered one of the most important releases to come out of the vibrant late-90s New York underground scene. But despite the success of Funcrusher Plus, Company Flow’s run was was short-lived. The group dissolved over the next few years due a falling out with Rawkus and internal differences. In 2000, El-P created the profoundly influential independent label Definitive Jux and released Fantastic Damage two years later. The album was produced entirely by El-P. Critics praised the album for its apocalyptic production and dark subject matter. For its lead single “Deep Space 9mm” he painted a picture of urban paranoia. On the track “Stepfather Factory,” he rapped from the perspective of a CEO building abusive robots. Although El-P is now best known as one-half of Run the Jewels, albums like Fantastic Damage remind us of his stellar solo career.
