He is still young and expects himself to start afresh. He not only leaves his sister and brother-in-law but breaks up with his childhood sweetheart. Alone, he comes to Lai Chin-shui, a woodcraftsman in Sanyi and learns the skills from Chin-shui. Wen-hsiung does not mind making little money in wood handicraft. Instead, he works hard to improve his skills and as a result, he wins Chin-shui’s approval and Hsui’s admiration. Hsui is Chin-shui’s daughter, who is unable to speak. Nevertheless, Chou, whose father owns a handicraft store in town, is in love with Hsiu and therefore, he tricks Chin-shui into expelling Wen-hsiung. Having no choice, Wen-hsiung goes back to his sister and since his brother-in-law has stopped abusing his sister, Wen-hsiung settles down in his hometown, working as a woodcraftsman. Soon, on the day Wen-hsiung’s ex-girlfriend asks him to go back to her, he learns Chin-shui has a stroke. Wen-hsiung rushes to Sanyi but to his surprise, he finds that Kuo Chun-fa, a former fellow inmate of his, has taken advantage of this crisis as he installs himself in their home and even attempts to sexually assault Hsiu. In such circumstances, what should Wen-hsiung do to resolve the situation? Healthy Realism movement began in the 1960s and by the late 1970s, as Taiwan suffered a series of diplomatic setbacks, the intellectuals’ intention of saving the country with culture was the most prominently expressed in the utopia portrayed in the films made by the directors who came from China as they projected their feelings for their homeland onto the screen. Moreover, the movement artfully corresponded with the government’s policy of stabilizing Taiwanese society and therefore, Healthy Realism was combined with propaganda and patriotism. Among the wave of films made resulting from the international relations at that time, The Story of a Small Town is the paragon. Instead of the highbrow tone adopted in the Healthy Realist films before it, it incorporated popular music and stars. Furthermore, the Chinese elements seen in the early Healthy Realism disappeared as the film successfully aroused people’s desire for an idyllic small town while Taiwanese society was undergoing a rapid process of modernization.
