Discover the sustainable legacy of De Grendel Wine Estate, a historic farm on the slopes of Tygerberg Hill that has balanced award-winning winemaking with environmental stewardship for five generations of the Graaff family. First established in 1720, the estate was purchased by Sir David de Villiers Graaff in 1890. Initially a renowned horse and dairy farm, modern viticulture was introduced in 1999, blending centuries-old tradition with state-of-the-art cellar technology. De Grendel is a certified net carbon sink, meaning its extensive vegetation absorbs more carbon than the farm's operations release. Over a third of the estate’s power is generated by an on-site solar photovoltaic plant. As of 2026, this system is being upgraded from its original 210kWp to a 500kWp capacity to further reduce its reliance on the grid. As a WWF Conservation Champion, De Grendel has dedicated 25% of its 422-hectare farm to a conservancy area. This protects rare Renosterveld habitat and provides a sanctuary for indigenous game like eland, bontebok, and red hartebeest. The estate utilizes advanced soil-monitoring technology to reduce irrigation water by 40% annually and operates a reverse osmosis plant to treat borehole water, ensuring self-sufficiency during droughts. In 2025, the estate implemented drone technology for efficient cover crop sowing and continued its use of resident turkeys for natural, chemical-free pest control.
