Podiatric surgeon and wound care expert Jason Hanft developed the Foot Defender to fill a void he saw in the available options for patients suffering with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). While diabetic shoes are constructed to help prevent DFUs, they are insufficient to assist in the diabetic foot ulcer healing process. TCC (Total Contact Casting) is an optimal approach for offloading pressure on the bottom of the foot (a necessity to promote wound healing), but this solution is often impractical at the time of diabetic foot ulcer diagnosis, since imaging, blood flow studies and other diagnostic measures often need to be done first. To provide a solution for patients to begin healing on “day 1,” Dr. Hanft began his journey to produce a superior medical boot, even taking into account the need for the type of stylish design and comfort that promotes patient compliance. The science behind the Foot Defender addresses, among other things, the materials incorporated in this unique CAM walking boot. For example, the scientific bracing includes an anterior carbon fiber AFO on the front side – and a posterior AFO in the back that runs from the calf to the toes. The combination of these two braces allows for the transmitting of force up the leg, thereby reducing force on the bottom of the foot. The footbed of the shoe includes a patented shock absorbing material called Absorbium within the cushioning, providing advanced impact force reduction. The Foot Defender incorporates medically required features paired with enhanced comfort and styling contributions from world renowned footwear designer Michael DiTullo.
