The Scientific regime focuses on having children perform age appropriate skills to maximize their athletic potential. So, what is LTAD and why is it so important in a child’s development? These phases act windows of opportunities but our body is more ready than at any other point in life for developing certain skills such as flexibility. If we understand each phase with our young athletes we can enhance their enjoyment of sports and maximize their athletic potential and this is the purpose LTAD model. It was created from 20 years of world class research and it is here to simplify the ages where this athletic windows of opportunities present themselves and provide skills. If the correct development occurs at the right stages in life we can give children everywhere fun safe and age specific pass through sports that will bring about the highest level of the personnel reward. Coaches who engage in the model and its practices are more likely to produce athletes who reach their full athletic potential. Through the improvement of physical literacy (fundamental skills such as running, jumping, and throwing), the LTAD model will help develop a lifelong involvement in physical activity and sport participation as well as producing future athletes. Proficiency in many types of physical activity may increase the chances of lifelong participation in physical activity, which could increase longevity and overall quality of life. The LTAD framework ultimately strives to produce elite and consistent performers; however, it also seeks to provide opportunities for all children to grow into confident, healthy and active adults. Children who do not develop their fundamental motor skills by age 12 are unlikely to reach their genetic athletic potential. A lack of fundamental motor skills may mean the difference between a day on the couch versus a day at the soccer pitch or the difference between a gold medal performance and a 16th place finish at the Olympics.
