Parathyroid adenoma is a small, benign tumor of the parathyroid glands, which are located near the thyroid gland in the neck. These glands produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which regulates calcium levels in the blood and bone metabolism. In a parathyroid adenoma, one of the parathyroid glands becomes enlarged and overproduces PTH, leading to a condition called primary hyperparathyroidism. The most common symptoms of parathyroid adenoma include hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium levels), which can cause a range of symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, increased thirst and urination, kidney stones, bone pain, and osteoporosis. Some people, however, may be asymptomatic. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to check calcium and PTH levels, and imaging studies like ultrasound or a nuclear medicine scan (sestamibi scan) to locate the adenoma. Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the affected gland, which is often curative and can lead to a significant improvement in symptoms and reduction in the risk of complications associated with hypercalcemia. Monitoring of calcium levels post-surgery is important. In most cases, the prognosis after treatment is excellent, with many patients experiencing complete resolution of symptoms and normalization of calcium levels. Regular follow-up is necessary to ensure that calcium levels remain stable and to monitor for potential recurrence, although this is rare.
