Watch the other Emily Haddad clips on this YouTube channel and you'll understand the reason for her rapid ascendance from the local to the national scene. Actually, the INTERNATIONAL scene where she sang on the summer jazz festival circuit in Europe. Emily Haddad made her debut in Chicago as a 5-year-old at the Gold Star Sardine Bar. A year later while doing the European jazz festival circuit she crossed paths with Dizzy Gillespie who immediately noticed the nature of her gift and became a friend and mentor to both Emily and her father, guitarist Habib Haddad. Dizzy appeared as guest soloist at some of Emily's jazz festival concerts, had her as guest vocalist with his big band and readily agreed to be on her debut CD release, a cut from which you're listening to now. As this recording session illustrates (when she was a seasoned 8-year-old), Emily had an uncanny knack for scatting through chord changes in the most pure and intuitive manner. You're listening to an excerpt of "Bye Bye Blackbird" that includes Dizzy & Em trading eights and then doing the out chorus. Here's the personnel on this cut. (See the slideshow above for the personnel listings for the other songs. Emily Haddad: vocals Dizzy Gillespie: trumpet Habib Haddad: guitar Jodie Christian: piano Larry Gray: bass Rusty Jones: drums Alejo Poveda: percussion Jazz historians and discographers of Dizzy Gillespie will have to boot up their word-processors. It's unlikely that their authoritative tomes include this obscure and unique session. Jodie Christian, the pianist on this song, was a titan of jazz who never really received his due. For example, few people realize that he was a co-founder of Chicago's world-renowned AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). He made his transition on February 13, 2012 at age 80. Here's a live performance clip on this channel that has Jodie on electric piano. • AACM co-founder JODIE CHRISTIAN + ANDY GOO...
