Museum of Glass - Visiting Artist: Åsa Sandlund - 10/17/2025

This week in the Hot Shop we have Åsa Sandlund, who has been invited along with her husband Preston Singletary to create an exhibition for the National Nordic Museum in Seattle. This unique opportunity will showcase our creative life together in the NW, one of the centers for the Studio Glass movement. This has come at an interesting crossroad in her life after having worked in the corporate world for nearly 30 years. The National Nordic Museum's plan is to tour the show to other partner Museum’s in the states as well as Nordic countries. She will need to produce all work within the next year (November 2025) to exhibit the show in the Fall of 2026. Most of the work that she has produced, including archived work is now sold, and so the need to recreate some of these pieces is necessary to show the origins of her connections to glass as well as develop newer ideas. My work spans from the functional to the decorative. With the help of our hot shop team at MOG, they plane to create plates of 2 color overlays to sandblast patterns of typefaces, an early interest of Åsa's. As well as incalmo techniques of opaque and transparent colors to create functional vases. Her Dimensions series are extra thick forms with colors close to the surface so that she can grind a clear lens into the belly of the shape that creates an inviting magnification effect.
