Leonardo Muller is a postgraduate researcher at the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research (CIMTR). In this chat we discusses his journey from a musical upbringing to exploring the neuroscience of music. He shares what he's learned from his research on ‘Groove’, a musical property that elicits an urge to move, explaining how it arises from a balance between rhythmic predictability and complexity. Leonardo connects Groove to brain processes, particularly the role of dopamine in processing rhythm and movement. We also cover the emotional power of music to evoke memories, shape moods, and even influence behaviour in surprising ways. I enjoyed talking to Leonardo about the connection between music, movement, and social bonding, drawing parallels between groove, ritual, and collective synchronisation. Especially his thoughts about how music can act as a safe space for processing emotions and enhancing well-being. He also shared about his current PhD research on sleep music for dementia caregivers, aiming to develop personalised music interventions to improve sleep quality.
