Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was a Norwegian composer of the Romantic period. "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" is a charming wedding march, part of Book VIII, Op. 65, of his famous "Lyric Pieces" collection. Originally named "The well-wishers are coming", Grieg wrote the short piano piece in 1896, commemorating the 25th ("silver") wedding with his wife Nina. The piece is in simple ternary form. Section A is both delightful and exciting, featuring a cheerful main theme, in solemn wedding march style, and two contrasting themes. The middle section exemplifies Grieg's lyrical ingenuity and creative rendition of extramusical narratives. The whole section is structured as a continuous dialogue between Soprano and Tenor voices, representing a married (or to-be-married) couple, facing each other and exchanging wedding vows. Like in many of his compositions, Grieg integrates elements of folk-music into the piece, such as the (open) perfect-fifth motif, prevalent throughout the left-hand accompaniment, or the rustic dance-like second theme of section A.
