The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) for the District of Columbia’s Substance Abuse Treatment and Mental Health Services Integration Taskforce (SATMHSIT), in partnership with the Maryland Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention, and the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, conducts a symposium bringing behavioral health, medical, scientific, legislative, criminal justice, and education leaders together to examine the current landscape of synthetic drugs in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Subject matter experts describe the innovative approaches under way nationally, regionally, and locally to tackle this issue; address challenges; and discuss viable, coordinated response strategies. Recognizing the porosity of our borders in this region, it is especially important to work together to address synthetic drugs in our jurisdictions. The symposium serves as an informative and interactive forum that helps to further a comprehensive and coordinated approach that balances the public health and public safety concerns related to synthetic drug use throughout the Metropolitan area.
