Professional Leadership Speaker Jason Reid discusses his view of awkward leadership. https://jasonreid.ca Transcript Awkward leadership is not what you think "When I talk about awkward leadership, I’m not suggesting you bumble your way through tough conversations or make people uncomfortable on purpose. What I am saying is this: Great leaders lean into awkward moments instead of avoiding them. And like most interesting discoveries, I stumbled into this idea by accident. You see, I spent years leading teams in the television industry: managing people, navigating deadlines, and trying to bring out the best in others. Later, when I began speaking on leadership topics, I naturally leaned into my own personal stories. And that’s when something clicked: Every major leap I made as a people leader came from an awkward situation. Awkward Leadership Puts Responsibility Before Comfort And I know, no one likes feeling socially uncomfortable— when you’re just looking after yourself, you can often avoid that sort of conflict. You can let things slide. But, as parents know, as soon as you’re responsible for others, that changes. You HAVE to find the courage to step in to the uncomfortable. Like many leaders, I’ve had to give tough feedback. Working in television it was Sometimes personal — about appearance, dress… once even body odour. I’ve had to handle serious issues: sexual harassment, heated arguments between team members —And once, I even had to tell a respected employee to put on a shirt when he was in the office. And yes, sometimes some people got upset. A couple even cried. But the majority of the people.. actually thanked me. And this is what initially surprised me: in MOST cases, the relationship got stronger after that awkward conversation. Because when you deal with conflict calmly, logically, and with empathy, people don’t lose respect for you — they actually gain it. Awkward Leadership is About Dropping the Mask of Perfection But awkward leadership isn’t just about facing conflict — it’s also about letting GO of the need to be seen as perfect. Sometimes, it means saying “I made a mistake” or “I don’t know about that” People respect leaders who are REAL. LEADERS who are willing to show THEIR humanity in a professional way. Now, is it embarrassing sometimes? Sure. But if you LEARN from those awkward conversations— it’s not failure. It’s fuel. One thing I do know is this, navigating those messy, uncomfortable moments can make you the leader people love to work for. ll make you a great people leader."
