Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 in D major, K. 504, the "Prague" Symphony, was completed in Vienna on 6 December 1786 and first performed on 19 January 1787 in Prague, with Mozart present for the occasion. It takes its nickname from that triumphant Prague connection, at a time when the public there was especially enthusiastic about Mozart’s music and about his opera Le nozze di Figaro in particular. The symphony is notable among Classical works for having only three movements: I. Adagio - Allegro, II. Andante, and III. Presto, so it omits the usual minuet and trio that many of his other symphonies contain. Scored for a relatively large Classical orchestra with pairs of woodwinds and brass, timpani, and strings, it makes particularly rich and independent use of the wind section, something listeners often associate with the strong wind playing tradition in Prague. The finale, Presto, returns decisively to D major and launches without any slow introduction into a whirlwind of perpetual-motion energy, its opening theme a bright, darting figure that seems to burst out of the gate mid-stride. Cast broadly in sonata form, the movement races through a kaleidoscope of short, sharply profiled ideas that Mozart develops with a deft, almost playful contrapuntal touch, including brief fugato passages that show off his command of learned style within a sparkling, theatrical surface. Syncopations, rapid dynamic shifts, and sudden excursions into minor keys inject a note of drama beneath the brilliance, again inviting comparison with the quicksilver changes of mood in his operas. As in the earlier movements, the woodwinds have an unusually independent and often soloistic role, trading motives with the strings and adding coloristic flashes that heighten the sense of jubilant bustle. After a tightly argued development and a recapitulation that subtly recomposes and redistributes the material, the symphony hurtles to a jubilant close, leaving an impression of dazzling virtuosity and high spirits that must have delighted the Prague audiences who first heard it.
