Taking a Trip on the New High Capacity Metro Train | Melbourne's HCMT First Revenue Service

Melbourne's HCMT First Revenue Service Metro Trains Melbourne Hello all, Welcome to a Melbourne trains video from late 2020. Today we take a trip on Melbourne's brand new High Capacity Metro Train which operated on the last Sunday of 2020for the first time with revenue passengers. Doing the honours is HCMT set 11, adding an extra train service to the timetable in the morning. A single return service was run approximately 15 minutes ahead of a regular timetabled service. In this video we take a round trip beginning from Pakenham. We capture key technological advantages in the train compared to the older generation of rolling stock and some casual out-the-window ride content. The HCMTs are Melbourne's latest trains to arrive on the network. 65 seven-carriage sets are to be built by Evolution Rail, by way of a partnership between Downer EDI and CRRC. The shells were constructed by CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles then assembled at Downer EDI, Newport. The contract was awarded in 2016, when they were chosen as the most suitable of the three contenders, with the others being Bombardier and Eureka Rail. The first shells arrived in Victoria in 2018, and after various delays, they were finally able to move under their own power for the first time in 2019. The trains were originally planned to enter service in 2019 but this was pushed back to late 2020. The trains are seven carriages long and have a capacity of 1380 with expandability to ten carriages for a capacity of 1600.
