Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ordered to be jailed for a year on Tuesday (Sep 9), after the supreme court ruled his time in hospital detention in 2023 was an attempt to avoid jail. Despite being sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption and abuse of power, the 76-year-old never spent a night in jail: he was transferred to a private room in a VIP wing of a hospital after complaining of heart trouble and chest pains, and later had his sentence reduced to 1 year by the king.
