Rolex Middle Sea Race 2024 Start

The video shows the start of the sailboat Karpo. In the first part, the wind was 12-15 knots and picked up to 20 at the turning mark. Our strategy was to start on the port side of the start and use the spinnaker pole to enable us to sail deep angles if the wind changed direction aft. We also wouldn't need to gybe in that case. That didn't happen and we sailed through the harbour with about 150 TWA. On port/leeward we had Swan 53 Beduin who we had to give way. They were not aggressive as is usually the case for offshore races. Sailing up to the mark we were getting ready to gybe. We moved the asymmetric tack from the spinnaker pole to the bowsprit. There was not enough time to realize that the TWA wouldn't be appropriate for the spinnaker after the mark so the plan was to gybe at the mark and reach as high as possible in the given conditions. Ideally, we should have dropped before the mark. The gybe was rushed as there was not enough time to center the main. Soon after the gybe the stopper for the tackline couldn't hold the load and slipped a few meters. We swiftly transitioned to positions for the drop. At first, it was hard to get the spinnaker down since the 130 TWA was too much to drop. After bearing away to 160 TWA, the drop was much more easy to execute. After, we settled for a beam reach with the genoa to the next coastal mark, where we re-hoisted the spinnaker towards Sicily. Follow us on social media:   / karposailing     / karposailing
