In this video, I’m showing you how to draw a realistic eye using the subtractive method. This is a bit different than your traditional sketch; instead of starting with a white page, I begin by toning the entire paper with charcoal powder to create a mid-tone base. From there, I "draw" the light by carving out the highlights with erasers and then build back the deepest shadows using charcoal sticks and pencils. This process allows for much smoother transitions and a higher level of realism that’s hard to get with just a pencil on paper. This is a step-by-step, no-talking tutorial, so you can watch the entire process unfold at your own pace. If you’ve been struggling to get your drawings to look three-dimensional, give this method a try.
