It is dubbed as the Chinatown of Sabah due to many Chinese coffee shops and restaurants situated there. The street was known as Bond Street during the British colonial era and was established in 1902 after the construction of shophouses was completed. The street started as a railway track for the transportation of rubber all the way from Sapong and Melalap rubber estates in Tenom which ended at the wharf. The Jesselton Harbour was the main gateway from North Borneo during when there were no passenger planes. The market was once considered as the "heart" of Jesselton as major business activities were done there. Since then, farmers and ordinary folks from the interior and fishermen from the coastal areas would make their trip to sell agricultural produce and other crops in the market, this include the Chinese immigrant as well Filipino and Indonesian traders. Aside from agricultural products, local food, souvenirs, arts and craft, footwear, antiques and even pets are sold in the market. Along the market street, it is also the place where the old Jesselton Post Office (now the main office of Sabah Tourism Corporation (STC)) are located together with the Jesselton Hotel Gaya Street Sunday Market Malaysia Walking Tour Time Stamp: 00:00 Start of walk in the middle of Gaya Street 01:24 Dried snacks for sale 02:02 Fruiting plants for sale 02:12 Traditional biscuits 02:42 Air plants (don't need as much water to survive) 03:25 Sabah snacks 03:40 Fountain at the roundabout 05:34 Buskers performing 06:42 Magnets for sales 08:14 Bracelets for sale 09:03 Wooden back scratchers and massage tools 10:06 Baked bread and steamed buns 10:44 Never Close Super Mart 😄 14:00 Old Singer Sewing Machines 14:04 Birds and fishes as pets for sale 14:36 Traditional biscuits 17:28 Traditional snacks 18:15 Bee wax for sale 18:23 Urns, ceramic bowls, Sabah musical instruments 19:55 Roast coffee beans 21:01 Bananas 21:58 Traditional medicine ointment 22:32 Famous Yee Fung restaurant (Serves great laksa) 23:38 Vegetables for sale 26:51 Ice cream van 27:42 Perfumes for sale 28:06 View of the surrounding buildings 28:44 Plants for sale 29:20 Preserved fish for sale 31:49 Even more preserved and dried fishes for sale Contacts: Instagram: @alanchuatravels
