This is the last gold mine that I know the location of in the Waiorongomai Valley on Mount Te Aroha. It was a pretty massive hike to get up here and I was hoping to find more. I know there must be others but that will require further research. It was a beautiful day out in New Zealand bush and I needed to go for a tramp just to keep my fitness up. The mines here are from the late 1800s and the gold and silver was locked up in a telluride with a lot of manganese. Unfortunately they tried to develop this goldfield just before cyanide started to be used in processing. Without it, the extraction of precious metals was costly and inefficient. All the major players left this area before technology caught up and smaller players didnt have the capital to make it profitable. Piles of unprocessed ore remain on site, hidden beneath dense regrowth.
