MALEME GERMAN WAR CEMETERY 🇬🇷 4K Drone | Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Kreta Μάλεμε

In 1941, during the Second World War, Germany tried to invade the Greek island of Crete (Operation Mercury). This war is known as the 'Battle of Crete'. Thousands of Luftwaffe-paratroopers were dropped above Maleme airport. However, together with the British and Commonwealth forces (Australia and New Zealand) hundreds of local Cretans left on the island (mostly elderly, women and children) took their guns and riffles from home to defend the island and shoot the helpless paratroopers from the air. They managed to hold the German offensive for days. During the first days of the battle 5,000 German and Austrian soldiers were shot down and thousands more were wounded. The remains of 4,500 German soldiers were buried at the Maleme Military Cemetery (Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof). Many of the stones at the cemetery have 2 to 4 unknown soldiers (Unbekannte Deutsche Soldaten). Most of the fallen men were very young soldiers from 16 to 20 years old.
