Over 70 farmers and agri pros from across the South Island turned up to the Willesden farms barn open day on December 2. They walked the full 31m × 185m composting barn and saw how it powers a 300ha dairy conversion milking 800 cows. The setup slashes footprint by 46 %, captures all effluent, keeps pasture pug-free in wet winters, and pays back in five years while cows stay dry and productive. They saw how the barn shelters up to 800 cows in bad weather and winters 550 off-season. Full case study https://numatagri.co.nz/composting-ba... There was a proper Q&A session where Matt Iremonger, Tyler from the Willesden crew, and Professor Keith Woodford answered everything: compost management, day-to-day operations, savings, and the lot in between. Here’s some of what came up straight from the floor: From Matt Iremonger: “Whatever we want to do it needs to have a practical financial return so ensuring that we are getting cows that are happy, comfortable, well fed and down at an economic cost that comes down to the simple things around feedface and square footage that they have to loaf in and obviously easy of entry and exit from the barn” “No ongoing costs of R&M with the roof, it's a permanent structure, this is a 50yrs structure but it could be an 80yr structure.” “Environmental and financial are effectively identical.” “This dairy shed and barn reduces our end lost water by 65%, our P loss by 35% and our e-coli load in the river by 70%. Carbon footprint obviously half as much feed, we have the ability to use the compost to put that onto the ground, and obviously there's no effluent that's coming out of the barn, that requires no energy to deal with or no management to deal with. The environmental part of it is really strong.” “The structure itself will be repaid in the 5 years.” About the @prolamnz6121 laminated beams: “Personally I love it, I think it's a better product than steel, it feels nicer in here, it feels warmer and less industrial… how soft it seems to look on the environment.” Tyler said: “From a management point of view, it can't really get much easier.” Keith Woodford wise words: “All composting systems look simple when they are working well, they can be simple but there's also mistakes that you can make, we have to make sure that people who go into composting get it right.” The barn serves dual purposes: wintering 550 – 650 non-milking cows in June and July, and sheltering up to 800 during bad weather. Big Thanks to the Crew & Everyone Who Showed Up Massive thanks to Matt Iremonger, Tyler and the whole Willesden Farms team for opening the gates and laying it all out. You hosted like legends—transparent, straight-up, no holding back on the real numbers, the daily grind and the wins. Huge respect to Professor Keith Woodford for jumping in, sharing his compost knowledge and answering everything thrown at him. And to the 70+ farmers and agri pros who made the trip - thank you for bringing the hard questions and the good banter. Events like this exist to help farmers see what actually works so you can future-proof your business, lift efficiencies and improve returns.
