........Also in 1993, a solo album consisting of demos Free had sung for a mother/daughter songwriting duo named Judithe and Robin Randall was released on an independent label in the UK called Now and Then Records. The album entitled Long Way From Love was re-released on Frontiers Records in 1998. This album version included some of the live performances Free gave while in Manchester, England for the first rock festival known as "The Gods of AOR" in October 1993. MARK FREE was working as a cashier in a photographic laboratory at the time he joined KING KOBRA. Originally from Michigan, Free had been in and out of bands upon his arrival in Los Angeles but had not got to the point of recording anything with any of them, including MODERN DESIGN with whom he had played with guitarist Ronnie Mancuso in 1981/82. Mancuso (who later went on to play an integral part in BEGGARS AND THIEVES) had been working with erstwhile VANILLA FUDGE drummer CARMINE APPICE on a VANILLA FUDGE re-union album for Pasha. Carmine asked Mancuso if he knew any singers as he was looking for singer for his D.N.A. project with RICK DERRINGER in order to tour Japan. Mancuso hooked Appice up with Free. The tour, however, didn't happen. Appice went off to tour with OZZY OSBOURNE. But on the drummer's return Appice contacted Free again and the pair put the nucleus of KING KOBRA together in early 1984, releasing their debut album a year later in a two album deal for Capitol Records. Free quit the band prior to the recording of the third album and found himself having to take a job as a courier for a messenger service in order to earn a crust. Meeting songwriter Judithe Randall changed the singer's fortunes. She contacted Mark to sing on some of her demos and began to act on his behalf as an unofficial manager. It was through Randall that Free became involved in the SIGNAL project being put together by songwriter Mark Baker and producer Peter McKeown. McKeown was fired before the album was recorded. Prior to Free joining the SIGNAL project he had been invited up to Vancouver by Appice to try out for BLUE MURDER, the band being put together by ex TYGERS OF PAN TANG and WHITESNAKE guitarist JOHN SYKES. Evidently the group had been working with RAY GILLEN, but the singer had quit for BADLANDS. In December 1988 Free flew up to Canada, but his tenure with BLUE MURDER lasted only the length of a couple of rehearsals before he knew things would not work out and he headed back to Los Angeles. Earlier on in 1988 Free had actually recorded once more with Appice and ex KING KOBRA colleague Mick Sweda in a studio project, BLACK ROSES, put together for the horror movie soundtrack of the same name. Joining the trio came Italian guitarist MASI and ex QUIET RIOT and GIUFFRIA bassist Chuck Wright. Four tracks appear on the Metal Blade issued official soundtrack album. Two years in the making with the vocals of Mark Free being the last piece of the jigsaw, SIGNAL's 'Loud And Clear' album was released on EMI in early 1990 and almost immediately the band split, the other members of the band unwilling to tour. Mark, in the meantime, had met ex WORLD TRADE duo Bruce Gowdy and keyboardist Guy Allison and the trio formed the nucleus of UNRULY CHILD, enlisting the services of bassist Larry Antonino and erstwhile HURRICANE drummer Jay Schellen to complete the line-up. Produced by Beau Hill, the self-titled UNRULY CHILD debut was released in 1991, but the band's label, Interscope, dropped the band two weeks after the record had hit the stores due to Hill falling out with the Interscope heirarchy. The band became TWELVE POUND SLEDGE and a second album was recorded but not released. Free, at this point, decided to put together a solo project and the resulting album, 'Long Way From Love' - a collection of tracks mostly penned by Judithe Randall and her daughter Robin - was released by the British independent Now And Then label in 1993. Guests on the album included Finnish vocalist AINA and ex ALICE COOPER bassist Erik Scott.
