Along the strip of volcanoes in central Java, rain is a clockwork occurrence. As the morning mist rolls out, afternoon rain rolls in, bringing a momentary pause to the day. Once, we were out in the field looking for clouded leopard tracks, when the heavy rain came down and we were forced to take refuge in a rather spooky cave. As we watched the giant bamboo sway and succumb to the wind and water, my mind was occupied firstly by the hope that no snake had the same ideas as us and then, in a weird way, by the thought that I was lucky to be in this cave, under the creaking bamboo, feeling mud between my toes and experiencing something the dwellers of Mount Sindoro had a millennium ago. Clockwork rain in a montane forest. Rains conjures different emotions in different people. While I was happy in that moment, Lelly wasn't—in fact, she'd rather have been at home, in her bed, reading a book while she sipped a cappuccino and the rain bothered someone else. For some, it brings life and for others, destruction. Our feelings about it may be unique, but what is universal is that humans have developed an emotional response to rain. We feel it, as much as we see or hear it. This short film is one I've wanted to make for a long time, where people share their thoughts and stories about an aspect of daily life is that often viewed as more mundane than profound. So, I sat down with various people (Lelly, Arief, Catherine, and Donan) and gathered their thoughts on rain, mist, mountains, and the combination thereof, letting them share their experiences or wax poetic as they saw fit. It's a slow burn, as meditative as the participants themselves, so I recommend preparing a warm cup of coffee or tea, and letting the film flow through you. ___ Shot on location in and around Mt.
