“Departed” by Lightnin’ Luke, originally recorded on “Unholy Hymns” by The Bridge City Sinners. Note from Luke: This is a song I wrote for the Sinners as a response to St. James Infirmary, the classic jazz tune that went viral for the band a decade ago and sent us on the journey we’ve been on ever since. While we really appreciate and respect what the song has done for us, we don’t play it anymore, as we prefer to showcase our original songs. “Departed” was written as the antithesis to “St. James,” a more honest take on death than the razzle dazzle depicted in the later. Hope you enjoy my version, thanks so much for your support! ⚡️ “Departed” When I die don’t you dress me in no flat top fancy shoes Don’t let those motherfuckers play those goddamn St. James Blues When I’m departed there won’t be doubt You can burn my body to the ground When I’m departed I’m gone Oh when I die don’t spend your money on no high class fancy clothes I ain’t got much so what’s the use in spending it all When I’m departed oh when I’m gone My heart gone cold my race been run When I’m departed I’m gone They say that heaven’s up above, but I don’t know I drowned my suffered soul in alcohol They say that hell is down below, and so am I Waiting for the crimson blood to ooze from my eyes They say that heaven’s up above, but I don’t know I drowned my suffered soul in alcohol They say that hell is down below, and so am I Waiting for the crimson blood to ooze from my eyes Oh when I die don’t spend your fleeting time weeping over me Crying about love that clearly wasn’t meant to be When I’m departed oh when I go There won’t be no one left to save my soul When I’m departed Dearly departed So broken hearted When I’m departed I’m gone
