The work is compact and strikingly varied: the Prologue begins with a bold, declamatory cello statement; the Sérénade features light, fanciful, almost theatrical gestures; and the Finale drives forward with restless rhythmic vitality and brilliant passagework. Ani Aznavoorian performs on a cello made in 2000 by her father, the distinguished luthier Peter Aznavoorian, in Chicago. The full recital program also included Armenian folk songs arranged by Komitas Vartabed, Manuel de Falla’s Suite populaire espagnole, and Brahms’ Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major, Op. 99.
