In September 1944 a German castle and its surrounding town were declared by Hitler to no longer be German territory. Instead, the town became the official territory of one of Germany's allies. The Germans, Japanese and Italians opened embassies in this small town, which was now garrisoned by hundreds of foreign troops, including foreign SS.
