Causes for recurrence of fungal infection Please do not use any creams containing clobetasol propionate, mometasone furoate, betamethasone valerate , fluticasone acetonide. • Incomplete treatment o Complete treatment has to be taken as the fungus is very resistant to treatment. There will be initial improvement but the infection comes back as soon as you stop taking medications. o Duration of treatment depends upon the type of antifungal used and also the extent of infection. Usually the course of antifungal is 2-4 weeks. In extensive cases we even give treatment for 6-8 weeks. o Please do not take medications without a prescription. • Use of creams containing steroid: Any cream which has more than one component other than salicylic acid, should not be used. Steroid reduces the capacity of the body to mount a response, an inflammation, against the fungus. The fungus then grows uninterrupted causing increase in the size of lesions. As soon as you stop the steroid cream, the redness worsens. It also causes stretch marks to appear in the groin area. • Improper hygiene o Spread by contact. Clothes of affected person will have to be washed separately and sun dried. Followed by ironing. • Infection of toe nails o Latent infection in toe nails could be causing recurrent infection in legs and groin. If your toe nails are thick or yellow in colour, you will have to get it treatment to prevent recurrence. • Infection in another family member o It is common for more than one family member to be affected by this infection. Sharing of clothes and towels will have to be avoided. All the family members must be treated. Everyone has different immunity. Even if one member has just one small patch, until he is completely treated, it will keep causing severe infection in the other family member. o • Immunocompromised states such as diabetes. o It is routine practise to check blood sugar in patients who have extensive disease or disease with is not responding to ample course of antifungals. Diabetes , reduces immunity and ability to fight against infection. So recurrent fungal patient in a diabetic patient may be the sign of poor diabetic control.
