With the recent injuries and deaths from lightning strikes in South Carolina and Florida, I wanted to emphasize again why it's important to take thunderstorms seriously and know the hazards from lightning. You can be many miles away from the thunderstorm and still be hit by lightning - and the lightning which can strike many miles away is commonly positively charged lightning from the top of the cloud.
