#GuitarSoloTab #GuitarLesson #JazzGuitar #Jazz #GeorgeBenson Hi everybody, today we take a look at George Benson's playing in this beautiful guitar solo from "Breezin'". He's a great and very skilled guitar playere, I already transcribed Benson's solo from "I Remember Wes" (this is the link: • I REMEMBER WES (GEORGE BENSON) Guitar Solo... ) but respect to that one in this solo his style is different, less jazz and more blues-soul, more pop! The solo is quiet long so in the score and tab I divided it into four sections marked by the double vertical ending bar's cuts. It's easier to learn and practice one section at time. The key is D major and George uses D Major scale and interchanges D Major and Minor Pentatonics, fundamental of a bluesy sound. Now some advice for you regarding the fundamental aspects of this "black" sound and the most difficult parts! PERFORMANCE NOTES: GROOVIN' 16THS: there are 16ths groovin' everywhere in this solo, both on phrasing, on scales and by persisting the same note. To always be rhythmically stable in these situations you have to alternate picking constantly as if you were playing all the 16ths of the bar: imagine in a 4/4 bar every quarter divided into a group of 4 notes, you will pick them down, up, down, up, this is the rule! So if for example you have a rest or a tie (which works like a rest) of a 16th in a strong beat, that is a note that is to be picked downstroke, you have to skip that downstroke as if you had done it and the next note is to be picked upstroke. I recommend that you still perform the movement by passing your hand to the outside of the string so that the hand picks the next note upstroke by going back. Do this as long as possible throughout the solo. INTONATION: you can notice many 1/4 tone bendings along with semitone and full tone bends. The 1/4 tones are purely indicative and may have a different pitch depending on the solo phrases. These are blue notes! The fact is that you can actually divide a semitone into more than two notes, and in certain musical cultures these are different notes that have a precise pitch. So be careful about the pitch of these bends and when you have many of them in sequence that alternate with different bends I recommend not releasing and moving the string vertically each time between one intonation point and the other and not starting the bending again from the rest position of the string. EMBELLISHMENTS: in a similar perspective to the previous point other blues sounds are the notes embellished with a slide of a semitone or a whole tone from the behind, they can also be found in a fairly fast sequence of notes. They are usually written as acciaccaturas (the smaller numbers) and from the video you can understand which ones they are because I move between those notes with finger in horizontal direction. ECONOMY PICKING: the runs at bar 15, bar 25 and bars 29 and 30 are performed with economy picking. Pay attention to the picking symbols under the tab in the video and in the Guitar Pro file I put in the links below for download. I have written the picking symbols below these runs and you will find some pairs of notes at the string change played with the same downstroke. These phrases are very difficult and must be practiced very slowly, be careful to maintain the rhythmic division during economy picking. OCTAVES: in bars 33, 34 and 35 there are the classic octaves George Benson style: you have to finger the low octave with your index finger, the high octave up two strings with your pinky and dump the string in the middle with the bottom of your index finger, then jump between one pair of notes and the other with your hand in this position. You can play all these notes with a downstroke either with a pick or with your thumb. Good luck!
